James Browning uses everyday objects and comfortable sights to populate his otherwise stark, rural landscapes. Hotels, fast-food joints, streetlights and gas stations at once provide familiarity and a sense of distance for the viewer. Browning attended the Pratt Institute, and in 1993 received his BFA in Painting from the University of Oklahoma. His work has appeared in the magazine New American Paintings twice, and he received the T.G. Mayes Museum Purchase Award from the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Norman, OK in 1992. Browning currently lives in Omaha, NE.
