Joseph Biel figurative drawings in graphite or pastel, which he describes as "the passive everyman, the neophyte in over his head, the big dumb guy." These figures, all male, often resemble the artist himself, with large eyes, handsome features, shaved head; they suggest aspects of his psyche, dark fears or murderous desires. Biel received his MFA from the University of Ann Arbor, MI and a BFA from Drake University, Des Moines, IA. Biel has had numerous solo and group exhibitions, with his work reviewed in publications such as Art in America. He is also the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Grant.
