Painter Joseph Broghammer creates complex multi-media work that is both surreal and expressionist. The artist seeks to understand himself better by playing with his art – not unlike a small child plays with toys. He begins with ideas and then turns them into iconographic objects. Despite the otherworldly quality of his paintings, he considers his work ultimately to be about the average person. Broghammer received a BFA from the University of South Dakota and has completed graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He received Best of Show at the OEA Visual Awards Ceremony in December 2006 at the Bemis Underground and currently maintains a studio in Omaha, Nebraska.
