Although Leigh Craven is committed to the formal visual elements defined by figurative traditions – particularly those of German Expressionism and the Northern Renaissance – her drawings, prints and paintings reflect a contemporary context. She creates minimalist compositions, at times adding more visual elements to explore issues such as reverence, longing and estrangement. The artist received a BFA from Cornell University, College of Architecture and Planning, Ithaca, NY and her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design, Providence. A veteran of numerous group shows, her work is included in the collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, the Rhode Island School of Design Library and the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design.
