The forms that Leah Bailis works with come from photographs of actual houses, functioning as specific representations of the typical American home. Says the artist: “I want my models to mirror the beauty, the sense of melancholy, and the tension that I find in the originals.” Bailis earned her undergraduate degree at Bard College and studied at the Lacoste School of the Arts in France before receiving her MFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She has received a number of awards, including the Vermont Studio Center Fellowship, and has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions.
~”When I came to the Bemis Center, I was in a transitional time with my work. Being here has given me the freedom to explore and fail and succeed and ultimately find a new direction for my work.”
