Painter Peter Coe was born in New Haven, CT in 1964 and moved to New York in 1990. In his work, systems of technological and biological iconography occur around a surface that hinges between illusion and materiality. Purity of form, surface and intent is appreciated under these circumstances as indicators of some kind of utopia, similar to the poignant light-filled space of a computer monitor. Forms of growth, subjective cultural décor, entropy and other differentiations complicate this. Coe’s one-person exhibitions have been organized at the Festival del la Cultural Caribena in Santiago de Cuba (1994) and at the Bemis Foundation in Omaha (1991). His work has been featured in many group exhibitions, including Central Fine Arts and the Roger Smith Gallery, both in NY.
