Born in San Ignacio, Belize, Santiago Cal creates sculptures inspired by “chance encounters, dreams and ideas rooted in literature.” He works with the human image and its implications using fragments and symbolism to explore these themes. The artist received his BA from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania and his MFA from the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. He has exhibited widely, including shows in New Zealand, Spain, Mexico, Guatemala and Taiwan, and he has been an artist-in-residence at the Gruber-Jez Foundation in Cholul, Mexico and the Poustinia Land Art Park in Belize. His work has been reviewed in publications such as ArtWorld Digest, Art Papers, La Prensa Literaria, Art Nexus and El Nacional. Cal is a member of the faculty at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
