Don Nakamura creates work inspired by personal experiences, ranging from the lush landscape in Hawaii to urban life in Pennsylvania. His sculptures are frequently composed of abstract components that are stacked and joined together to create unique fantasy forms. Nakamura hand builds all his clay forms and images from clay coils, which he paints with intensely colored low-fire glazes. The artist received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has received numerous awards, including two Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowships, and he has exhibited widely. In 1987 Nakamura moved from his native Hawaii to study at the nationally renowned Clay Studio in Philadelphia, where he has lived and worked ever since.
