Barbara Simcoe directly addresses issues of Eastern European Catholic heritage. In particular, she explores imagery of the Black Madonna/Virgin as a metaphor for the feminine aspect of divinity and for the need to experience the discord and disorientation of darkness that can be transmuted to healing, knowledge and wisdom. A Fulbright Scholar to Lithuania, Simcoe has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows, and her work has been reviewed in publications such as Art Papers, the Houston Chronicle and Artweek. The artist is currently a full-time Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska, Omaha.
