Colin Smith

Colin Smith’s paintings are, in many ways, abstract advertisements, but they communicate with viewers through the language of mass media without the abrasive, commercial propaganda generally used by the media. The polished surfaces of his work resemble glossy magazine covers, computer monitors or television screens, and he uses non-traditional materials, such as resins and aluminum, which are customarily used in graphic design and commercial sign production. Smith received his BFA in 1988 from the University of Nebraska in Omaha and his MFA in 1992 from Drake University. This past year, the artist created the sculpture “promO!” for the O! Project, sponsored by the Bemis Center, Alegent Health and the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce.
