Donald Rubinstein— multi-media artist, singer/songwriter and composer work has been exhibited at both The Museum of Modern and Whitney Museum of American in collaboration with Kiki Smith. 2007 has seen three one person exhibits of Rubinstein’s work including:
Gallery 68 (Austin, TX), Linda Durham Contemporary Art, and The Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Fe, which mounted a three-day celebration and ‘thus far’ retrospective of his work entitled “Cool-aberrations in Art, Music and Film.
Rubinstein made his musical debut at age 24, by scoring George A. Romero’s cult classic film "Martin" which Mojo in 2002 named “One of the Top 100 Coolest Soundtracks of All Time.” Since then he has released 17 CDs, which range from jazz, to folk/rock to classical/experimental; scored several feature films and main titles for two television series; and been commissioned by dance companies and musicians from the Boston Symphony and New York Philharmonic orchestras. Jazziz magazine included a Donald Rubinstein-Bill Frisell duet, “Fingers” on their 20th anniversary limited edition CD, "Celebration of the Modern Era", with Miles Davis, Charlie Haden, Cassandra Wilson, Tony Bennet and others.
Donald received an ASCAP Special Award for Theater Arts in 1998. His multimedia and visual work have premiered in both New York City. His work “Seed” a series of 8 prints in collaboration with Kiki Smith will be showing at The Eugene Binder Gallery, opening October 5, 2007. He is currently working on a book of writings and drawings including contributors Terry Allen, Ashley Bickerton, Aaron Karp, Jane Abrams and others. Two new CDS will be released in October 2007 including: “The Unused Score for Pollock,” commissioned and recorded for the Ed Harris film, though never used (Perseverance Records); and “Take the Dark Away, a new set of avant rock songs on Spacebar Records.
In addition to his film scores Donald has written over 200 songs; numerous concert works; 4 multi-media performance pieces; and seven books of poetry and drawing. He has recently completed directing his first film, an animated short, based on his drawings entitled “Tales From the Edge.”
