John Thein’s work is simultaneously figurative and abstract. He spent over sixteen years as a print-maker working only in black and white and shades of gray. He says he was intimidated by the complexity of color; but today, color excites him. The artist received his BFA from the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, WI and both an MA and MFA from the University of Iowa. Thein has had over thirty solo exhibitions, and he has participated in many regional, national and international shows. He has also illustrated six books, and his work is included in numerous private and public collections, including the Sheldon Memorial Gallery, the Shannxia Art Museum (Xian, China) and the Instituto Guatemalteco Americana (Guatemala City, Guatemala). Thein is Associate Professor at Creighton University in Omaha, NE.
