Koo Kyung Sook explores how birth, growth, death and decay intertwine in the cycles of human experience. She also addresses women’s issues, such as living in male-dominated societies and grappling with body images. She has used seaweed, fungus, cotton, iron, bronze, sand and clay for the way their organic physicality reflects this primal experience. Natural elements, such as air, fire and water serve as catalysts that transform these materials into new sculptural languages. The artist received a BFA from both the Hong Ik University in Seoul, Korea and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. She has exhibited her work internationally in numerous solo and group shows, and she is a professor in the Art Department of Chungnam National University, Taejon, Korea.
