From the 1950s until late 1980s, George Woodman was primarily a painter, when he turned to photography full-time. His photographic images are highly constructed, and he often uses double exposure or reversal or layers photographs over additional images of objects, people or nature. Woodman often combines postmodern practices with museum artworks, and his subjects even include works by other artists. His work is included in numerous collections, including the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York) and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York). His is the subject of the 1997 book Museum Pieces: The Photography of George Woodman with a forward by Max Kozloff. This year the Bemis Center presented the solo show George Woodman: Paintings 1960 – 2000.
